LiDAR for SLAM

SLAM quality depends on how much of the environment a sensor can see, and how precisely. Field of view and angular resolution matter as much as raw range.

Which ZVISION LiDAR is best for SLAM?

For SLAM, ZVISION recommends the NZ1, NZ3 and NZ5x. NZ1: Ultra-wide-FOV LiDAR for mainstream robotics — 40 m, 240° × 80° FOV. NZ3: Mid-range wide-FOV LiDAR for outdoor robotics — 70 m, 240° × 80° FOV. NZ5x: High-channel-count LiDAR for drones & long-range robotics — 90 m, 180° × 80° FOV. Field of view over raw range: A wider FOV captures more environmental features per scan, which improves localization robustness — especially in feature-sparse corridors.

Where LiDAR fits

  • Building a map while simultaneously localizing within it
  • Loop closure in previously-visited areas
  • Feature-rich point clouds for robust localization in low-texture environments
  • Multi-floor or multi-room mapping continuity

What to look for

Field of view over raw range

A wider FOV captures more environmental features per scan, which improves localization robustness — especially in feature-sparse corridors.

Angular resolution

Denser point clouds (e.g. 192 channels at 0.5°×0.4° on NZ5x) resolve smaller features and improve map fidelity.

Consistent frame rate

Stable scan timing matters for real-time SLAM pipelines running on embedded compute.

In the field: ZVISION's wide-FOV NZ architecture is used specifically to improve navigation robustness in feature-sparse and complex indoor/outdoor environments.

Frequently asked

Does a wider field of view actually improve SLAM?

Yes — capturing more of the surrounding environment per scan gives a SLAM pipeline more features to match against, which matters most in corridors or open areas with few distinguishing features.

Which ZVISION LiDAR is best for SLAM-heavy applications?

It depends on environment: NZ1/NZ3 for wide-FOV indoor/outdoor navigation, NZ5x where higher point density is needed for finer mapping detail.
